Prof. Dr. Yavuz Aydın

Urinary incontinence is the uncontrollable leakage of urine. Urinary incontinence is a common health problem, especially in the elderly and women.

Urinary incontinence can occur for different reasons. Among the most common causes are:

  • Inability to do Kegel exercises: Kegel exercises are exercises to strengthen the urinary muscles.
  • Urinary tract infections: Urinary tract infections can occur in the bladder or urinary tract and cause urinary incontinence.
  • Hyperactivity of the urinary bladder: Hyperactivity of the urinary bladder can cause an abnormally frequent or sudden urge to urinate and lead to urinary incontinence.
  • Prostate gland enlargement (in men)
  • Removal of the ovaries (Hysterectomy)
  • Urinary incontinence can often be seen in pregnant women in the later stages of pregnancy.
  • Psychological factor

In the treatment of urinary incontinence, the method may vary according to the causes. For example, urinary tract infections are treated with antibiotics. Hyperactive bladder is treated with antidepressants, alpha-blockers or antispasmodics. Kegel exercises can help prevent urinary incontinence by strengthening the urinary muscles.

Surgical treatment is considered in cases where the cause of urinary incontinence is serious.
